In 1842 Antonio Fontanesi worked as a set designer for the Municipal Theatre of Reggio Emilia, then adapted to decorate private homes. In Turin, he entered the Legion Lombard volunteers and participated in the first war of Independence, remaining marked by the harshness of war.

Antonio Fontanesi (23 February 1818 – 17 April 1882) was an Italian painter who lived in Meiji period Japan between 1876 and 1878. He introduced European oil painting techniques to Japan, and exerted a significant role in the development of modern Japanese yōga (Western style) painting.

Signed at the bottom right “A. Fontanesi”. When it was first exhibited at the Promotrice in Turin in 1875 the painting generated a great interest among many critics and artists, such as Giuseppe Pelliza da Volpedo (1892) and E. Thovez (1901).
